Read: "The Lottery" Shirley Jackson, p. 315 The goal of this engagement activity is to start thinking about how writers employ techniques with specific ends in mind_ The global question is simply this: Why did Jackson write her story this way, with these techniques? 1. Choose at least TWO of the terms/techniques we've covered as your focus_ 2_ Decide on a `goal- or 'effect" you think Jackson has in mind in employing these techniques_ Are they intended to impact readers in a certain way? Control our reactions to a character or event in the story? Suggest something about the theme of the story? There are lots of possibilities here. 3. Discuss and analyze how the two techniques work TOGETHER toward that same end goal. How does each technique end up contributing to a unified impact on the reader or a thematic element of the story? How do the techniques overlap and build upon each other in creating that impact or. for instance, a thematic message? 4. Focus on providing at least one specific textual example for each technique you choose.

For the analytical engagement activities, we're shooting for a page or two. It's not formal, but try to find a focus, push your thinking. and employ textual evidence effectively.
