The Things They Carried Tone Analysis

Read: "The Things They Carried" Tim O'Brien, p. 846 Choose ONE of the following three prompts for this activity_ Remember that these assignments should be 1-2 typed pages in length (or equivalent for #2) and should demonstrate your abiky to engage a text in a meaningful way. That said, use quotes and specific examples from the text wherever appropriate_ I_ Analyze the tone of the story_ What does this story sound/feel like? Include several examples that you think are most important to creating that tone and analyze them in some depth_ 2_ 'Draw" the tone of the story. That is, draw whatever you think best communicates the mood or feel of the story_ Use/Draw whatever you think best represents the tone (characters, setting, abstract...). Label key features in each drawing to help viewers understand the choices you made and explain in a short paragraph how/why it represents the tone accurately_ 3. Analyze the point of view_ Is it a first, second, or third person? Why? What else seems notable about the POV? What impact does this point of view have on the story? On how readers interact with the story? How would the story be different with a change in point of view?
