PROF450: Ethical Opportunities in the Workplace Report

HSAD BS

20% of overall course grade

This assessment addresses the following outcomes:

  • Develop and propose a management solution to a relevant ethical concern/opportunity in their career discipline.
  • Utilize appropriate current technology and resources to locate and evaluate information needed to accomplish a goal, and then communicate findings in visual, written and/or oral formats.
  • Utilize effective skills in leadership, long-term care management, human resource development, financial and strategic planning, legal and ethical considerations, and patient safety and quality care in the health services environment.

Purpose:
As you have learned throughout your studies, ethics drive and govern an individual person’s behaviors and decisions between what is right and wrong. Ethical decisions and behaviors are present and instrumental in all aspects of a person’s life, especially their career. Regardless of your chosen field, ethical decision-making and conduct will be expected of you professionally and personally. This assessment will present you with the opportunity to evaluate an ethical opportunity or problem within your career discipline.

Description:

For this assessment, you will identify an ethical concern or opportunity from your career discipline and develop a proposal for a solution from the perspective as a manager in your field. To develop your proposal, you will need to:

  • Develop a background statement
  • Identify major and secondary concerns/opportunities
  • Outline the specifics of your role and how this problem would be solved by this role
  • Identify organizational strengths and weaknesses
  • Develop solution recommendations or alternatives
  • Create measurable goals with evaluation criterion identified

HSAD Specific Information

When working through this assessment, it is important for you to remember the healthcare professional must be effective in their role, efficient in processes, and adhere to regulations when making decisions.  Ethically, healthcare professionals must remove all personal biases and influences and make decisions in the best interest of the patient. Bear in mind the four basic principles for medical ethics: autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice.

Instructions:

You will complete this assessment by researching a real world ethical situation within your community or from a provided case study.

Upon completion of your research, you should prepare a five-to-ten-page written report of the situation or case using the following format:

Background Statement

You should craft a background statement outlining the necessary information relevant to the identified opportunity. The statement should minimally include the following:

  • Relevant information about the organization (hospital, business, etc.)
    • The information included here should be pertinent and concise to help the reader construct a clear picture of the organization.
  • What is occurring in the case or situation?

The statement should be presented in your own words with relevant and accurate citations present as necessary.

Major Opportunity and Secondary Opportunities

It is common for there to be more than one opportunity present when working with ethical concerns. In this section of your report, you will need to identify the major ethical opportunity as well as any secondary opportunities. When developing this portion of the report, be sure to include the following:

  • Identification of the major opportunity presented
  • Identification of any secondary opportunities
  • Describe the impact of the ethical concern
    • Consider what may have influenced the ethical dilemma/opportunity to occur
  • Analyze the impact each opportunity and prepare at minimum one recommendation for each opportunity.

This section of your report should include specific information supported by the research you have conducted in conjunction with the case study or situation. The prompts provided above are to be include minimally; to earn a higher score, be sure to provide relevant and factual supporting information.

Organizational Strengths and Areas of Opportunity

Every organization will have strengths and areas for growth and improvement. In this portion, you will be discussing the strengths and areas for opportunity of the organization as related to the ethical opportunity.  Using the case study or situation and the research you have conducted, minimally include the following in this section:

  • Identify the strengths and opportunities that exist in relation to the identified ethical concern
  • Describe what the organization is capable of effectively changing, with respect to the concern

The identified strengths and opportunities should include those at the managerial level of the problem.

Your Role

As you are working through the case or situation, you should be thinking in the mindset of a manager having to address the opportunities. In this section you will need to address the following points from a managerial/leadership perspective:

  • Describe how you would address the major opportunity.
  • Explain how you would take the ethical situation to your supervisor.
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of being in the role of manager in relation to the ethical opportunity?

This section of the report should include research to support your rationale for addressing and handling the opportunity.

Alternatives and Recommended Solutions

Now that you’ve further explored the case or situation and have identified opportunities and strengths, you will need to recommend alternatives and solutions to the ethical concern(s) you have identified. When completing this section of the report, be sure to minimally include the following:

  • At least two to three alternative solutions. For each solution, include the following:
    • What feasible strategies would you recommend?
    • What are the pros and cons?
    • State what should be done- why, how, and by whom.

You should be specific with each solution and include rationale for your recommendations supported with your research.

Evaluation

To ensure the solutions are being followed through upon, there must be measurable goals put in place with the recommendations. Each recommendation should be measurable and periodically evaluated for effectiveness. In this final portion of the report, you will need to thoroughly identify and explain the plan for evaluation. Be sure to include the following information in your report:

  • What is being measured?
  • How will each recommendation be measured?
  • How many check points will be included in the evaluation process?
  • At what point would the plan be determined “complete?”
  • How will you ensure that the ethical concern/opportunity doesn’t arise again?
