1. Write down all the foods and beverages you eat over a five-to-seven-day period, including  one weekend day. Record the amount and a description of each food or beverage.

1. Use ounces, cups, each, teaspoon, tablespoon, etc.

2. Estimate serving sizes, weigh the food, and/or use food labels.

3. You can also use "eyeball measurements:  A three-ounce portion of meat is about the size of a woman's palm, a deck of cards, or a computer mouse; a restaurant serving of vegetables is between one-half and two-thirds of a cup.

4. If you are unsure of a serving size, ask the server or estimate on the large side.
