4. Describe the anti-immigration backlash that has occurred in the three distinct time periods of immigration that
Gonzalez mentions in chapter 11 (1840’s, 1890’s-1920, 1980’s-present). Where was the majority of immigration
coming from during each of these periods? What issues did the established population have with each of these
groups of new immigrants? What kinds of laws did the anti-immigrant groups pass or try to pass in each of these
time periods in order to control immigration? Be specific.
5. Describe the 5 categories of legal immigration (power point). Why is it difficult to immigrate to the US?
Describe at least one specific restriction in each of the different categories that limits immigration? How do you
think the US immigration system could be reformed? Support your argument.
6. What reasons does Gonzalez give to argue that Latin American immigration will continue to grow? Do you agree
with Gonzalez? Why or why not?
7. Describe two myths about immigrants that both Gonzalez and the online articles address. Explain the
evidence/reasoning used in these two readings to support their argument. Do you agree or disagree? Support
