Module 1 Discussion
Chemical Roulette, Anyone?
If you stop and think about it, our lives are significantly impacted by chemistry. Chemicals and chemical reactions are everywhere! Quite literally, everything is composed of chemicals and influenced by chemical reactions, including YOU! Every physiologic process in your body requires at least one chemical reaction and each of these processes are critical to our growth, development, and maintenance of life. As important as it is, we rarely give it much thought.
Instructions
To begin, please watch the following short video presentation, CHEMISTRY in EVERYDAY LIFE (Links to an external site.).

For the second part of the discussion, you will apply what you have learned from the course materials in this module. By Thursday, create and post separately, two well-crafted questions for your classmates to answer. You must start each question post with “CLASSMATE QUESTION.” *** Please be sure to research your questions and add references.
Part C
For the last part of the discussion, you will thoroughly respond to two of your classmate’s questions. ***When responding to your classmate’s questions you must start with " CLASSMATE RESPONSE." *** This will assure that you are given proper credit for all posts.

Grandpa and Growth Hormone
Instructions
Aging is just a natural part of life. Unfortunately, as we age our bodies do not look or function as well as they use to. Many try to counteract the effects of aging through sensible modifications in their diet, exercise and rest while others may seek renewed health and vigor through the use of “all-natural” supplements or other, more extreme regimens.
The beginning is our teen years, the human body undergoes great periods of growth, most of which is directed by hormones. These hormones naturally decline however, as we reach adult maturity. “Body image” can become a near obsession for some throughout life, even well into one’s later years. In the program presented in the video below, the effects of aging are managed by exercise supplemented by a prescribed combination of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone (HGH).
To begin, please watch the following video, Cenegenics, Hormone Replacement Therapy (Links to an external site.).

Have You Lost Weight or Lost Your Mind?
Instructions
Our special senses do a wonderful job of keeping us aware of our environment in order that we can make both conscious and unconscious changes in order to maintain homeostasis. As efficient as these systems are, sometimes we need to “trick” them in order to achieve the desired outcome. Eyeglasses are a perfect example. Even though we have not made an actual anatomical change, altering the focus of the light within the eye enables us to see images more clearly.
The following video, shows us an example of how potentially a person’s desire for weight loss can lead her to “trick” her body in order to control her eating.
To begin, watch the video, Tongue Patch Diet (Links to an external site.).
Part A
After watching this video, address the first question based on your thoughts supported by research. Include with your post the research references in APA style format. Post your reply by Tuesday. After posting begin your textbook reading to complete Part B and Part C.
This video illustrates how a surgical procedure such as this would lessen the sense of taste. Doing so would decrease the pleasurable sensation of eating with the intended outcome of weight loss. Let’s assume that this is possible:
Question #1: Would this be a prudent choice? If available, should procedures like this be performed? In addition to this extreme example, there are many products that we use and things that we commonly do in order to alter our perception of our environment. Can you think of any examples of this?
Part B
For the second part of the discussion, you will apply what you have learned from the course materials in this module.
