Since World War II the United States has played the leading role in the world’s economy, culture and politics. This was also the period considered to be the apex of globalization. Indeed, some scholars have argued that globalization and American domination went hand in hand. (Refer to the map on page 794 in the textbook.) There have been several global reactions against this American influence as well.

How has the United States' global rise to power affected the world from 1900 to the present?

Consider focusing on a couple of key themes to shape your essay, such as politics, culture, economics, war, imperialism, etc. Use chronology to help shape the essay too. Remember, the question asks you to go back to 1900.

Make sure that you use examples from the textbook chapters, especially chapters 22 and 23, to support your answer. You should also use at least one of the primary sources from our work in the last part of the course for the essay. That means integrating a quote and some of the points from that history into a paragraph.

There should be an introduction that explains the main points that the essay will cover. It should also include a clear thesis statement that directly addresses the paper topic. There should also be a conclusion that makes some connections between the different issues raised in the essay and in the course.

Lastly, use the work that you have already completed (i.e. the chapter reading questions, primary source assignments etc.) to help write the essay.

Good luck!

Format

When using quotations, and there should be some, be sure to include the page and/or line number of the book. Just put them in parentheses at the end of the sentence.  Example:  (Strayer, page 235)

1,200-1,300 words (roughly 4-5 pages), typed, double-spaced, 12 point font. Papers must be saved in PDF,  Word (.doc or .docx format), as .odt (Open Text Document) or .rtf (Rich Text Format) only!  Make sure to include your last name as part of the file name. (Example: gerlach first paper.doc).
