A hot button issue about science education is clearly the debate about teaching creationism in the classroom.  As you see from your textbook, evolution is a scientific theory supported by scores of data and is accepted by scientific figures as the manner in which we got here today.  It is true that many scientists are religious in nature, as science and religion are not mutually exclusive, meaning you CAN be a religious scientist and a religious person that acknowledges science. It is not an either or....

On the flip side, many religious individuals are now beginning to question the existence of Adam and Eve. See this article (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) for more on this subject. But of course there will always be those who deny evolution due to their religious beliefs.

Task: After readings through the Evolution Chapters do some research on the teaching of and the history of both creationism and evolution in the science classroom.  Do you believe both topics should be given equal time? Why or why not? Make sure you are supporting your stance from the literature and thoroughly explain your opinion- provide some examples.  There are a few definitions on which you should be clear: what is science? what is evolution? what is religion? Make sure you are clear on the actual definitions- not what you think they mean, but make sure you actually know the definitions.

This image is a joke and DOES NOT accurately show evolution--in the beginning or the end!
