Discussion: Biopsychosocial Assessment

The biopsychosocial assessment serves as a cornerstone of effective case conceptualization. All elements of the client’s presentation (physical health, mental health, family, and friendships) must be considered to understand the complexity of the client’s situation. The client’s mental health status does not exist in isolation from other elements of his or her life. Therefore, the process of assessing the client and assigning a mental health diagnosis must mirror the complexity of the client’s entire personal environment as closely as possible.

For this Discussion, review the Learning Resources, including the media entitled Overview of Biopsychosocial Assessment: Purpose and Use. Create a fictional case study of a client with an addiction disorder that affects at least two life domains. Your colleagues will assess the client, so do NOT reveal the life domains in your case study. Use the discussion thread to present your client. Provide the following information:

•             Age of the client

•             Type of addiction and what is the source of the addiction (e.g., cocaine, alcohol, nicotine)

•             Describe the client’s ethnicity

•             Describe the client’s relationships

•             Describe the client’s current health

•             Describe the client’s social life

•             Describe the client’s psychological well being.

Please remember that you are presenting a case study as though you are a counselor sharing this case in clinical supervision.
