1. Choosing works of art Select two works of art that reflect contrasting cultural contexts related to body image.Be sure to select two VERY different cultures. It is a good idea to compare artworks from different continents. [ie. Asia and Europe; South America and Africa; Europe and Africa etc.]There are several chapters in your book, not covered in class, that examine the artwork of othercontinents and cultures. Consult Chapters 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. These chapters will be a valuable resource as you select works of art to compare. Also look at books in the library that contain color pictures of artworks (“N-NZ” numbers/Library of Congress). Choose clear color reproductions of paintings or sculptures that interest you. Selections must be approved by instructor.

2. Writing a contextual analysisa. Develop a title for your paper that introduces your topic.Include a title page that lists the names of the works of art, the media or materials used to create them, the name of the artists, and the years they were completed.(In your list of citations be sure to include the source information [book and page number/or website] where your artwork is located.)b. Introduce the reader to the theme of beauty. Describe how interpretation of the theme varies depending upon the cultural context.c. Use your selected works of art to illustrate and explain your thesis. Look at the artworks.What is the subject matter?What is the artist trying to communicate?How does the artist’s interpretation reflect the time and cultural context in which he or she lives? Be sure to provide background with regard to history and culture that RELATES to the artworks you have selected.Be sure to compare aspects of the selected artworks throughout your paper.
