What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a large family of viruses that cause illness that ranges from cold to more severe diseases. For instance, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS) are some of them. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new disease discovered in 2019 and hasn’t been previously identified. Coronavirus is zoonotic, which means they transmit between animals and people. Several known coronavirus circulating between animals have not yet affected humans. Investigations show that SARS was transmitted from civet cats to humans, whereas MERS was transmitted from dromedary camels to humans. It typically attacks the respiratory system.

Cause of Coronavirus

According to experts, the infected animals may have transmitted the virus to humans at the market of Wuhan, China. The market sold live fishes, animals, and birds in Wuhan. The market was shut down later and disinfected. Bats are a possible cause of coronavirus. It is because they have evolved to coexist with many viruses and found to be the starting source of SARS. It is possible that bats transmitted the virus to an intermediate animal in China and passed the virus to humans.

Symptoms of Coronavirus

Pneumonia is the cause of coronavirus in humans. Those who have already fallen ill reported suffering from breathing difficulties, cough, and fever. In some severe cases, there can be organ failure. Antibiotics are of no use as this is viral pneumonia. But milder cases may represent flu or a bad cold, making it difficult in detection. The symptoms may be visible if you have recently visited China, Korea, or Italy. Recovery depends upon the strength of the immunity system. Many of the people who died were already in poor health.

How Coronavirus Spreads?

The droplets that produce when an infected person sneeze or coughs is a cause of coronavirus. Any infected person could spread the virus by touching a surface. That’s why it’s important to avoid touching public surfaces or wipe them with a disinfectant. But coronavirus spread from China to around other 80 countries as well. It led to a worrisome situation in the entire world.

Report on COVID-19

The total cases in China are around 80,881, with 3,336 total deaths and 68,000 recovered people. In Italy, the cases rose to 27,980, with 2,158 deaths and 2,749 recovered. Iran and Spain come in second and third highest cases with 14,991 and 11,178, respectively. The cause of coronavirus affected countries is South Korea, Germany, France, USA, Switzerland, UK, Netherlands, to name a few.

How to Protect Yourself?

Prevention and precautions are the only cure for this disease. Until now, no vaccine is made to prevent COVID-19. Countries need to take this pandemic seriously and be prepared to deal with it. You can take some of the precautions which will help in protecting yourself from this deadly disease. Some of them listed below are:

Wash your Hands

It is the most basic yet effective way to prevent the cause of coronavirus. Wash your hands with clean running water. Lather your hands, including the back of your hands between your finger sand under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds and then rinse it.

Cover your mouth with a tissue during cough/sneeze

Cover your mouth while coughing and then throw the tissue in a bin and wash hands if you don’t have a tissue to cover, then cough or sneeze into your elbow rather than hand.

Use face masks

Face masks offer protection as they block liquid droplets. However, they cannot block the aerosol particles that can pass through mask material.

Seek early medical help

If you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, then seek early medical help. Share your travel history with healthcare providers.

Quarantine yourself

If you have returned from an infected country like China, Korea, or Italy, then stay indoors for at least 14 days. It means not going to work, school, or any public areas. This could be safe for yourself as well as for the health of others.

It is time to collectively stand together to curb the deadly coronavirus. Be alert, be aware, but do not panic. Stay indoors and stay safe is the only way we can fight the coronavirus.
