What is a Dissertation?

A dissertation is a research project that must submit for a postgraduate or undergraduate degree. Moreover, it allows students to present their findings in response to a question or proposition. Generally, students choose the topic of Dissertation by themselves. The primary purpose of this project is to test the research skills that students have acquired during their degree. Though students can seek guidance from their tutors, so these dissertation projects are independent.

Two types of Dissertation are empirical dissertations and non-empirical dissertations. They vary based on your course of study.

Empirical dissertations involve the collection of data from various resources. They are highly preferable in degrees like psychology. In this Dissertation, students have to follow professional and ethical guidelines. While collecting data from members of the public. It mostly concentrates on laboratory work.

Non-empirical dissertations include existing data and arguments in other’s work. It can only mean that students have to put a lot of time with their heads in the book. In this Dissertation, students not only describe other’s work but also critically analyze the work and explore the practical application of it.

What is a Thesis?

A thesis is generally a statement that declares what you believe and what you intend to prove. As a literal definition, these are theoretical arguments that have a scholar foundation. It is the literal meaning of a thesis. They state the main idea or summary of any information, research question, hypothesis, focus, argument, and many other written works.

There are three main types of thesis statements— explanatory, argumentative, and analytical.

An explanatory thesis is a statement based on factual information.

An argumentative thesis gives a stance based on a debatable topic.

The analytical thesis analyzes or breaks down an issue or ides into its different parts.

Primary Dissertation vs. Thesis Differences

Their main difference lies at the end of their completion. The thesis is an academic caricature that marks the end of a master’s program, while doctoral study requires Dissertation. The following are some differences between  dissertation and thesis.

Contribute to New Knowledge

Dissertations are like an opportunity to contribute to new knowledge, theories, or practices to the field for young students. More likely, the Dissertation is a showcase of your thoughts and ideas. But, the thesis aims to show your ability to think critically and analyze every detail about a topic.

Unique Hypothesis

Dissertation means proving your novel hypothesis, theory, or concept. Here you have to come up with a new idea as a whole. But in the thesis, you research a topic and then analyze and comment upon it. Besides this, how it relates to a particular subject and describes the views of the writer.

Goals

The main goal of your Dissertation should be the demonstration of the literature review and methodology. But, the thesis aims to develop more in-depth knowledge, understanding, and capabilities. It also helps in developing attitudes in the context of the program in students.

Length

A bachelor’s thesis often contains 40-60 long pages, and a diploma thesis is usually 60-100 pages long. Since they are short summaries of some information or research work, so it has to be concise and precise. But the Dissertation is an intricate work, even 2-3 times the length of the thesis. It requires a lot of time and work since it has to be lengthy and readable to the audience.

Guidance

Since the research course of the thesis has materials like academic journals, newspapers, and other media, so, in the thesis, we analyze other’s work and comment upon them and sometimes relate it to our paper. But, the Dissertation is more like a research paper. They are unique. Students have to put all their knowledge, whatever they have learned during their time at university.

Thus, these were some differences between Dissertation vs. thesis, which every scholar should know before submitting their project.
